ZAYEDESA has engaged in environment protection activities since its inception and has actively campaigned and brought awareness about environmental activities in the community which include;
Reduction in the use of non-recyclable plastic bags.
Re-use of waste into productive items, where the re-use items can become an Income generating activity to vulnerable women in the villages.
Tree planting.
Beach cleaning.
School Environment Program
In partnership with the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) and Zanzibar Association for Private Schools (ZAP), ZAYEDESA is coordinating an Eco-Schools Indian Ocean Program in 30 Pilot Eco-Schools in Zanzibar (21 Unguja and 9 Pemba), which is Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in relation to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for provision of Environmental Management and provision of „Greene Flag‟ certificate.
ZAYEDESA is also an associate member of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), for sustainability of Eco-Schools program in Zanzibar.
Training For Migrant Fishermen
ZAYEDESA in partnership with Chumbe Island Conservation Project (CHICOP), Peer Educators conducted seminars with local fishermen from the coastal areas, who were educated on the dangers of destroying the coastal environment using dynamite fishing and unplanned harvesting of mangroves.
Supply of Hygiene Materials
ZAYEDESA provides cleaning equipment and hygiene materials, and its members and partners participate in community environment sensitization activities to promote responsible waste desposal in designated locations.
